Assistant Clinical Position in Curriculum and Instruction/Bilingual Education: The University of Houston, College of Education, Department of Curriculum and Instruction is seeking a Clinical Assistant Professor in Bilingual Education who will serve our Urban Education teacher preparation and Master’s programs at either the Sugar Land or Main Campus.
The University of Houston (UH) is the second most ethnically diverse major research university in the country and is designated as a Hispanic serving and Asian serving institution. Houston is the fourth largest and one of the most diverse cities in the country with a large international population. The College of Education at UH has a long-standing partnership with Houston Independent School District (HISD) and Fort Bend Independent School District, along with other large school districts, to prepare highly effective teachers to serve the local communities.
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate academic programs in multiple areas of specialization. Our programs have a special focus on social justice, and value community engagement, diversity, and student success. We welcome candidates whose experience in research, teaching, and service have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity, excellence, and interdisciplinary collaboration. All three departments of the College of Education have many faculty members whose research interests and projects focus on English language learners' success. The successful candidate will have many opportunities for collaboration in the College and within the University.
Qualifications: Applicants for this position must hold a doctoral degree in Bilingual Education or in a related field with evidence of effective teaching ability, commitment to student success, and service to the profession. Experience in mentoring under-representative minorities along with advanced proficiency in Spanish are desired. Candidates with Bilingual and ESL certification, native-like proficiency in Spanish, experience teaching online both synchronously and asynchronously, and experience with teaching second language acquisition, along with successful teaching experience in U.S. K-12 bilingual settings and/or teacher education experience will be given priority consideration.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate(s) will teach Bilingual/ESL Education courses, with one or more courses taught in Spanish, specifically designed for pre-service and in-service elementary, middle, and secondary teachers and will engage in research-based instructional practices linking university coursework to instructional practice with K-12 children. Active engagement with the Houston community and service to the Department, College, University, and the education profession are also expected.
Appointment: This is a nine-month appointment. Review of candidates will continue until the position is filled. The anticipated start date is August 2020.
