To uphold the mission of ESLI through instruction, advising, and providing student services
To provide quality instruction for multicultural adult ESL students
To provide support for students from varied cultural, educational, and economic backgrounds
To collaborate with colleagues to build and evaluate assessments and assignments supportive of the ESLI curricula and mission
Position Duties Include:
Teach four classes per term, three to four terms per year, over five levels of the ESLI program.
Allow at least five hours per week for student conferences/office hours (3), faculty meetings (1), and other training meetings (1).
Adhere to the federal, state, and university requirements related to FERPA, Title IX, copyright, and other legal mandates, including participating in trainings and applying knowledge in the classroom and in student interactions.
Implement adopted texts and supplemental materials in the classroom and participate in the review of course materials, including textbooks, assignments, assessments, and learning management systems using feedback from colleagues, students, and administrators, and research from the field of TESOL and assessment.
Use appropriate methodology specific to the fields of TESOL, pedagogy, and adult education.
Provide academic advising through regular office hours and specialized meetings with assigned advisees and students.
Participate in all academic excursions, including field trips, orientation events, and student pick-ups.
Attend and participate in all departmental and committee meetings.
Assist in development, review, and assessment of program curricula, assessments, activities, and student services.
Regularly make use of email to interact with colleagues, students, and administrators.
Use the ESLI-approved learning management system daily to post syllabi and assignments, assign homework and assessments, track grades and attendance, and communicate with students and colleagues.
Participate in at least fifteen hours of professional development per year.
30-40 hours per week teaching, office hours, and other ESLI duties required.
Paid vacation is detailed in contracts.
Sick and personal days per term are detailed in contracts.
Minimum Education Requirements:
Master’s Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
Master’s Degree in related area and specialized training in all of the following areas:
language teaching methodology
the nature of language/languages (e.g., introduction to linguistics)
the structure of English (e.g., syntax, phonology, morphology, discourse)
second language acquisition
intercultural communication (e.g., sociolinguistics, cross-cultural studies)
Teaching experience, preferably at university level with ESL adult learners for academic faculty and with adults for general English faculty.
Ability to relate to students from varied cultural, educational, and economic backgrounds.
Ability to apply interpersonal and communication skills in collaborative settings with local and company-wide colleagues.
Ability to review, evaluate, and apply goals, objectives, and student learning outcomes through a variety of assessments that have been reliability and validity tested.
