ESL Instructor 

The ESL instructor supports the school’s immigrant-centric mission by providing excellent contextualized instruction.  The ESL instructor teaches in a way that is appropriate for students’ diverse educational backgrounds, learning styles, and English language abilities.  

Responsibilities:

• Prepare clear and concise daily lesson plans including objectives which are available to supervisors
• Provide life skill instruction that allows students to navigate important systems and resources in Washington, DC
• Implements classroom policies and procedures
• Provide for different learning styles and abilities
• Encourage students’ active participation and regular attendance
• Monitors student progress through TEAAL and CASAS tests
• Create course syllabus according to content-based Carlos Rosario Curriculum, TEAAL and CASAS pre-test scores and student goals
• Foster’s a positive learning environment for adult learners
• Monitor and evaluate student performance and modify instruction accordingly
• Prepare lesson materials and instructional aids
• Work with classroom para-educator if applicable
• Work with tutors to provide additional support for students if needed
• Co-plan with Computer Assistant Learning (CALL) Lab Instructor for technology skill development and e-portfolio completion
• Keep daily attendance records current in the Student Information System (SIS)
• Accurately fills out tracking forms and submits them in a timely manner
• Develop and use e-portfolio assessment to help document student progress
• Keep track of student goals related to academic progress and employment
• Attend faculty meetings and professional development 

Requirements: 

• Must have at least two of the following:
• Teaching Certification
• Master’s degree in Adult Education, Linguistics, TESOL, language studies or related field
• At least three years of teaching experience
• Excellent communication and organizational skills
• Proficient in Microsoft Suite: Word, PowerPoint, and basic website navigation
• Experience in ESL and Adult Education preferred
• Demonstrate knowledge and competence in both ESL preparation and Adult Education
• Must be flexible and able to make adaptations to meet the academic needs of students with different learning skills and challenges
• Work comfortably with people from diverse backgrounds
• Excellent communication skills, be able to explain concepts to others effectively
• Excellent organizational skills and timely completion of tasks
• Fluently speak, read and write in English
• Knowledge and experience using Windows, Internet Explorer and Microsoft Applications including Word, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Outlook 

Schedule: Monday - Thursday: 5:45pm – 9:00 PM
