Adelphi International is a partnership between Adelphi University and Shorelight Education. The mission of the International Accelerator Program is to immerse international students in the academic and cultural life of the university, help them integrate into campus life, and provide the support that increases their academic successes and likelihood in obtaining their degrees.
The Assistant Academic Director (AAD) manages a team of instructors and oversees the delivery of academic programs to a diverse group of international M.B.A. students in an Intensive English Program (IEP) and an International Accelerator Program (IAP). This position will specifically oversee delivery of the Master's Accelerator Programs (MAP) at the Adelphi M.B.A. Manhattan Center. Reporting to the Academic Director with dotted-line responsibility to the Academic Chair and working with the National Academic Affairs Team, the AAD will provide professional support and development, including observations and performance reviews, hiring new staff, ensuring the timely and effective delivery of all products and services, and communicating regularly with academic team members about developments within the IEP and IAP.
The IEP combines intensive English language instruction and support with academic skills enhancement and acculturation for students who wish to study at a U.S. university but must first improve their English-language ability by one or more CEFR levels before beginning the accelerator program. The IAP includes two or three semesters of advanced English-language, acculturation, and credit-bearing academic courses before matriculating into the M.B.A. program.
Lead the teams of IEP and IAP instructors in the Adelphi M.B.A. Manhattan Program.
Stay current with the latest developments and best practices in ESL/EFL pedagogy, curriculum development, testing, and teaching
Oversee and support development of ESL course curricula; advise on the selection and/or preparation of supplemental teaching materials (including textbooks, websites, multimedia resources and self-created materials) for international students at specified CEFR levels (A2 to B2+)
Conduct academic information sessions/workshops (e.g. FAM trips, progression workshops, new student orientation, etc.)
Track at-risk students and develop intervention strategies
Plan and administer placement exams
Hire ESL teaching and tutoring staff
Maintain up-to-date records of student grades and attendance on the IEP and IAP databases in accordance with I-20 visa requirements and all other relevant regulations
Work closely with the University Registrar to devise class schedules for students across programs
Oversee the academic support services for students across programs and advise students, as needed
Conduct regular observations of instructors in the classroom, keeping accurate and complete records and communicating the results
Conduct annual performance reviews of instructors, as directed
Ensure that instructors produce and follow lesson plans that reflect effective teaching strategies, meet the individual needs of students, and foster a communicative, student-centered classroom environment
Collect and organize records of all formative and summative student evaluations, and produce reports summarizing student results, as directed
Provide opportunities for staff development and professional training, and participate in same when appropriate
Act as a positive ambassador for Adelphi International
Assist the Academic Director and AUI program as needed
Master's degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Higher Education Management, or related field required
Previous coursework or experience in the business field desired
Demonstrable knowledge of applied linguistics, second language acquisition, language-teaching methodologies, assessment, and curriculum/lesson planning; TEFL certifications (CELTA, DELTA, Bridge, or Oxford) preferred
Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), and the can-do statements at each CEFR level
Minimum of 3 years of experience managing ESL teachers
Minimum of 3 years of teaching general and academic English to L2 learners
Overseas experience or experience teaching in multicultural/multilingual classrooms desired
Ability to work in a diverse environment and exhibit cross-cultural competence and understanding
Proven customer service skills and demonstrated work ethic
High energy level and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
Demonstrated problem-solving, decision-making, and creative-thinking abilities
Demonstrated tact, patience, and diplomacy, particularly with non-native English speakers
Evidence of having a hands-on approach to academic delivery, student service, and business growth
Demonstrated understanding of class management tools, including databases, Microsoft Office programs, course management systems, and forms of media to support an interactive and student-centered classroom instruction
Exceptional interpersonal, communication, presentation, and leadership skills
Competence in a foreign language preferred
