Northern Arizona University seeks a successful, experienced administrator to serve as Director of its Program in Intensive English (PIE), starting July 1, 2017. The PIE Director is responsible for developing and implementing a strategic vision for program development and growth that aligns with the programmatic mission of instructional excellence, teacher training, and applied research. The successful candidate will be committed to international education and will be able to work effectively in a team environment.
The Director position involves overall responsibility for leading an academic and professional staff of 15-20. Duties include the following: effectively market the program and recruit new students from diverse markets (foreign and domestic travel necessary); deliver existing programs and develop new programs; oversee professional development of faculty; develop and manage program budgets and facilities; collaborate closely with the Center for International Education (CIE) on international student recruitment, welfare, academic success, and retention; coordinate with Applied Linguistics faculty; ensure that PIE is in compliance with NAU policies and procedures; represent PIE on campus; and participate actively in local, regional, and national professional organizations.
A master’s degree in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), Applied Linguistics, or closely-related field AND 3 years of Intensive English Program (IEP) management experience in a post-secondary setting in positions such as, but not limited to, Director, Associate Director, or Assistant Director.
Preferred Skills and Abilities
Marketing and Recruitment
Demonstrated success developing and implementing plans to recruit and retain international students for intensive English programs, both semester-long and short-term
Experience with effective online marketing tools for an intensive English student market
Demonstrated success with implementing best practices in the areas of program administration and innovation (e.g., experience with CEA accreditation)
5 or more years of IEP management experience in a public university setting
Experience with language testing and program assessment
Experience with teacher training and professional development for faculty
Applied knowledge of current theories and issues relevant to second language teaching and learning
Expertise with curriculum development and implementation, particularly in the areas of EAP and ESP and bridge or pathway programs
Expertise in student advising on academic, attendance, conduct, and other issues that affect student success
Strong record of effective teaching
Strong record of on-going professional development (including participation at NAFSA, TESOL, or AAAL)
Personnel and Budgeting
Demonstrated experience in providing effective program leadership
Experience in hiring, supervising and evaluating faculty and staff
Experience developing and managing budgets for existing and new programs, both long and short-term
Experience preparing budgetary reports and projections
High level of English proficiency which should include excellent written and oral communication skills
The ability to communicate diplomatically with diverse constituencies
Additional Salary Information: Commensurate with experience.**The starting salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected applicant balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.
