English Language Learner Specialist to be responsible for tutoring, advising, teaching and otherwise supporting both domestic and international English language learners enrolled at Miami University’s regional campuses. This is a full-time, 12 month position.
Coordinate and administer the ELL program for domestic and international students including scheduling, curriculum, placement, programming, data collection, and instructor development; teach section(s) of ENG 007: Fundamentals of Writing/ELL, EDT 002: College Reading II/ELL, ENG 151: Intro to Critical Reading/ELL, ENG 106: Orientation to American Language and Educational Culture, ENG 108: U.S. Cultures & Composition for L2 Writers, ENG 109: College Composition for L2 Writers, or other courses or workshops as needed; advise ELL students regarding courses and degree programs; tutor students as needed and assist the training of peer tutors; communicate and collaborate with the faculty and staff on all campuses of Miami University; conduct outreach to the local community by establishing relationships and communicating with local ESOL programs; research best practices and policies in ELL programs including conducting research as it relates to developmental education, academic support, English language program, and TESOL; attend all staff meetings, planning meetings, and end of year retreats for the Office of Learning Assistance; develop and deliver study skills workshops, programs, or learning labs for individual language learning when appropriate; represent OLA at campus functions including high school visits, open houses, campus visit programs, and other programs as needed; research, develop, and implement innovative ELL support programs for all domestic and international students; attend regional and national professional conferences related to TESOL, developmental education, learning assistance, and academic support; investigate, locate, and secure grant opportunities; prepare reports for director of learning assistance pertaining to position responsibilities and program effectiveness; perform other duties as assigned by the director of learning assistance.
Require: Master’s degree in TESOL or a Master’s degree in a related field and TESOL endorsement or certification; two years of experience working with non-native speakers of English; experience with curriculum development; strong interpersonal, cross-cultural communication, and organizational skills.
Desire: College-level teaching experience; understanding and ability to relate to a non-native speaker’s experience.
