Leadership Public Schools' (LPS) mission is to prepare students to succeed in college and become leaders in their communities. LPS is a network of three urban charter high schools dedicated to providing exemplary education in underserved communities in the Bay Area and developing replicable practices that can address critical issues in the wider education field. LPS has developed a national reputation for accelerating the achievement of students entering high school below grade level and for creatively leveraging technology to empower teachers and students. LPS Hayward Opportunity
LPS is seeking the next visionary leader for the Hayward campus. This is an incredible opportunity for an experienced leader to work with a high-performing team of innovative and collaborative educators who are deeply committed to supporting all students in becoming college and career ready community leaders.
A high school where 60% of the students qualify for free/reduced lunch and 80% are first generation college students, LPS Hayward is far surpassing other similar schools in its student achievement, rigor and innovation of its academic program, and college acceptances and success. In a district where 10.5% of students are admitted to the University of CA system, 30% of LPS Hayward students are offered admission to a UC campus. In Hayward generally, 40% of high school students complete the A-G requirements to be eligible for UC or CSU admission; 92.5% of LPS Hayward students complete all A-G courses. The school has been awarded a “GOLD” designation in the Best High Schools rankings by US News and World Report and was recognized by Innovate Public Schools as the top performing Bay Area High School for low-income Latino students.
Visionary Educational Leadership
- Provide Instructional Leadership – Set the tone and culture of the school, lead staff to convey the highest of expectations for students, and hold the school accountable for student achievement. Use data to improve teaching and learning, coach teachers and administrators, support and monitor implementation of CCSS aligned curriculum and assessments, and focus the school community on effective teaching and learning.
- Ensure College Readiness For All – Support strong, college going culture and high expectations for all students. Oversee data-based academic, college counseling and intervention programs. Support the expansion of the College Launch program (online concurrent-enrollment courses) in partnership with community colleges.
- Innovate Personalized Teaching and Learning Models – Work closely with the CEO, other principals, and the LPS Ed Team in developing powerful ways to leverage educational technology to achieve accelerated outcomes.
- Accelerate Academic Outcomes – Develop the capacity of teachers to use a variety of instructional strategies, including technology resources, to build missing foundational skills and accelerate movement to proficiency and beyond. Ensure effective implementation of instructional strategies that accelerate the achievement of underperforming students, English Learners and special education students.
- Develop Career Pathways – Oversee the development career pathways grounded in community leadership that focus on technology, design and educational careers. Support Robust Intervention Systems – Ensure effective implementation of a range of intervention programs to support academic achievement and academic culture.
Transformative School Culture
- Positive School Environment – Create a vibrant and positive school culture that supports student learning and deep relationships between students and staff. Develop the systems, relationships and practices that support the safety and security of students and staff.
- Responsive School Community – Create a strong, personalized, culturally responsive, learning environment that supports and engages all students in their learning. Develop the capacity of faculty and staff to implement trauma-sensitive practices and systems.
- Inclusive Schools – Support restorative justice practices, mindfulness approaches, and a community-responsive environment to deepen students’ sense of belonging.
Operations and General Administration
- General Administration, Management and Leadership – Oversee the daily running of the school, addressing discipline/behavior issues with the Assistant Principal, supporting intervention and restorative justice programs, overseeing student support programs, scheduling, managing budgets, coordinating with the home office and strategic planning, leading the staff through WASC, developing a health and fitness program.
- Talent Management – Recruit, build, sustain and manage a collaborative, high-achieving team of returning and new LPS teachers and staff members.
- Community Relations – Build relationships with families, local institutions and businesses and the School District and schools.
- Research and Development – Work closely with the CEO, CAO, other principals, the LPS Ed Team, and external partners to refine and institutionalize the LPS design process.
- Network Collaboration – Partner with the LPS network in defining and implementing the LPS educational vision, collaboration processes and initiatives.
- Enrollment and Recruitment – Oversee and participate in outreach and enrollment activities and partnerships as the school leader.
- Facilities – work with the School Manager, Director of Operations & Director of Facilities to ensure a facility to meet the needs of the school and community.
The ideal principal candidate will have:
- Administrative Services credential required (Master’s degree strongly preferred) Strong sense of urgency in addressing the needs of our students and a relentless drive to attain results
- School leadership experience with a track record of high levels of growth on multiple measures
- Minimum of three years experience teaching in an urban public district or charter school with demonstrated success in moving student achievement
- Excellent interpersonal skills including collaboration and a team orientation, leads and inspires others and has demonstrated success in leading a cohesive, culturally-inclusive team
- Effectively problem solves and prioritizes initiatives to keep themselves and their team on track
- Demonstrated ability to effect positive organizational change
- Proficient in the use of technology with a vision for powerful, targeted use of ed tech
- Bilingual speaker of Spanish preferred (conversational Spanish required)
- Ability to authentically connect with students, parents and the larger Hayward community as well as external partners and funders
- Skills to thrive in a small school environment; able to generate enthusiasm and support among staff and community partners for the school’s mission and vision
