The English Language Institute at the University at Buffalo (SUNY) seeks applicants for the position of Program Director, English as a Second Language Instruction.
Founded in 1971, and housed within the University at Buffalo’s Graduate School of Education, the English Language Institute (ELI) specializes in providing credit and non-credit instruction to learners of English as a second language.
The Program Director provides academic and administrative leadership for the ELI’s credit-bearing ESL program. S/he will also provide interim academic leadership for the ELI’s non-credit bearing, Intensive English and Evening Programs, and will teach and/or serve as a substitute instructor within the English Language Institute.
The Program Director will, among other related duties:
Oversee the instructional program, including supervising an adjunct instructional staff of approximately 20-25. Oversee curricular matters and instructional material development and selection. Manage course and program scheduling and instructional assignments.
Advise new and continuing university students on required and appropriate ESL courses, monitor student compliance with admission and/or degree requirements, manage the student registration process, and participate in new student orientation
Serve as a liaison between the English Language Institute and the university community, and promote awareness of UB’s English as a second language policies, conditional admission offers, and language-related student placement requirements, instruction and recommendations.
Assist in the development and continuous review of courses and programs, and update and increase instructional opportunities. Assist in regular review of accreditation standards and procedures that apply to the non-credit Intensive English program.
Project short-term and long-range needs for ELI instruction, and help prepare related budget and hiring requests.
Teach in the semester or summer program, and serve as a substitute instructor in the temporary absence of the assigned classroom instructor.

• Master’s degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics or a closely related field • Five years of directly-related experience. Experience must include teaching English to non-native speakers of English and academic administrative experience. • Supervisory or teacher training experience • A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and persuasively to individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds, interests, positions, and fields. • Excellent organizational and demonstrated leadership skills. • Strong computer skills, including in Microsoft Office programs. Ability to use or to learn to use educational software and course management software.
Preferred Qualifications include a doctoral degree in Foreign/ Second Language Education, Applied Linguistics or a closely related field; or a combination of a Master’s Degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or closely related field and a Doctorate in International Education or Higher Education Administration. Experience working or studying internationally. Competency in or advanced study of at least one language other than English
